Americans may be safer than they think as tourists in Baja California.

Darey Castro is a minor celebrity in Mexico‘s banda and grupera music community. Though he‘s had several songs on the charts, his greatest claim to fame is surviving an attempt on his life. In 2004, he was shot four times during an incident that killed four of his band mates. The bloodletting occurred as a result of his affiliation with two warring drug cartels. Today he lives in Los Angeles and says he is forbidden to return to his native country.

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO---Baja is safe for visitors and he hopes its tourism sector quickly rebounds, a leading U.S. diplomat told El Mexicano newspaper in a front-page story published Monday.

Ronald Kramer said that publicity about Mexico‘s war against drug cartels had falsely created the impression in the U.S. that the area is unsafe for visitors.

Rosarito Beach Reminds U.S. Visitors Of New June 1 Document Requirements.

ROSARITO BEACH, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO --- This tourist destination reminds visitors from the United States that as of June 1 they‘ll need a passport or similar document to re-enter the U.S. by land or sea.

That is the date for full implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Since January 2007 the requirements have been in effect for air travelers returning from Mexico or Canada.
